Paint n Paper

Home Improvements
Watch it transform from hell hole to hovel.  It's amazing what a little paint n paper will do... ok and some tiles.

Day 81

Posted 5/31/2020

Day EightyOne: Someone from out of country asked if our quarantine was over... I thought to my self quarantine? Umm... are you asking if we are allowed to play hockey yet? That's pretty much the gold standard of life returning to normal as Canadian's know it... No, we are not allowed to play hockey yet. A slow start to the morning, no one went out of there way to wake anyone up, I woke up and fell back to sleep a few time before we actually hauled our asses out of bed and made breakfast... eggs, omelettes, cake... yes cake, apparently I wasn't fast enough at the stove this morning... Heather ate half an omelette and stopped... too full... can't eat anymore... yes, she got into the birthday cake while waiting for the eggs. Meh, her birthday weekend, pretty much free to do as she pleases. She made Lawson a smoothie to go with his breakfast. Had a coffee and made plans for the day... she was going to clean out the lower cupboards in the kitchen and I was going to make doors for them... I got out the tape measure and wrote down some number as to how big the holes were and how much Maple I had in the basement. I then took all the data and headed off to the computer, I'd sketch up some doors, take some measurements from the parts and go cut some wood... oh sure if I had enough Maple I would have just gone down and started cutting pieces... but honestly that crap is expensive not like the cedar and pine I have lying about everywhere. First thing I changed to save wood was the type of joints from lap to dowel, the insets got 1/4" smaller all around as did the bevels they were going to set in... the goal was to cover the hole and have enough extra to allow for adjustments, I cut doors to fit the hole once... sure in a prefect world that would work but having a little wiggle room will look a lot more professional than gaps showing. I made a layout, a parts list... added up the sizes of the parts, laid them out on the wood I had, double checked them... they were wrong... did it again, laid it out again, checked the amount of wood, too little, changed the design to get a few more inches in there, laid it out again, the numbers didn't match, a fourth time... no luck... by dinner I almost had it... Heather had made stuffed mushrooms for dinner, they were wonderful but not the boy's cup of tea, he got sausage and perogies because he likes that. Back to the computer... You know I think I finally got it... and then I realized the drawer fronts were too thin and after all that I'm still going to have to buy more to finish 2 drawer fronts. I'm starting to realize why it's so hard to find solid wood cupboards and doors now... everything at Home-depot is press-board/ fiberboard/ cardboard/ lotasboard but not real solid wood... I guess it's a dying fad. Pretty sure I could put a big block Chrysler motor in my kitchen cupboards though without anything adverse happening... wouldn't want to do that with particleboard. Just like the good old days when things were designed with overkill in mind... so are the cupboard strong enough to hold all my dishes? Er, I don't know how I'd figure that out exactly, how about I just make them strong enough that I think they may hold an elephant... then I will be sure it will hold all your dishes. Now it's like: "...and make sure you read all the instructions that come with the set before, after and during use, if you don't load them properly and keep only the recommended number of plates on your shelves it will void the warranty and will likely fall off the wall. Feels like I got nothing accomplished today but I do have a cut list and will likely be heading into the basement tomorrow to start making sawdust. Didn't even have time to play any games today or read squat on the internet. Tired of thinking must quit now.
